SensL has launched the SPMPlus, a large-area version of the company's silicon photomultiplier detectors. A viable solid-state alternative to large-area analog photomultiplier tubs, the device's 1.3x1.3cm total active area is achieved with a transparent glass substrate and connector design that allows the array of individual silicon photomultiplier pixel signals to be summed as a single output. The detector features include a <-1mm working distance between the source and the detector surface, 30-v bias voltage operation, magnetic insensitivity and high tolerance to ambient light. The company's biasing circuitry ensures onset times<10 ns and recovery time < 60 ns. The device achieves 10⁶ gain and a gain stability comparable to that of traditional photomultiplier tubes. Applications include nuclear medicine, environmental monitoring, fluorescence spectrometry and imaging, and microarray imaging.

CW terahertz radiation is obtained by means of difference frequency mixing on a semiconductor antenna ("photomixer"). Two laser beams of slightly different wavelengths are superimposed on the photomixer, which generates a terahertz wave at the beat frequency of the two lasers. TOPTICA’s distributed feedback (DFB) diode lasers offer high output power and are thus ideally suited to efficient difference frequency mixing. A further benefit is the large mode-hop-free tuning range of the DFB lasers. The difference frequency of two DL DFB or dfTune lasers can be tuned from 0 to 2 THz, which covers the absorption signatures of a broad range of relevant substances including explosives.
TOPTICA offers three product packages to help customers select the most suitable components for their CW-terahertz experiment: a basic laser package, a high power package, and a precision frequency control package for high-resolution terahertz spectroscopy.

Toptica Photonics AG has brought out three white-light lasers for microscopy and biophotonics applications, including multiphoton excitation and time – resolved photon counting. The FemtoFiber lasers also have applications in frequency measurement and in femtosecond and terahertz spectroscopy.

The infrared supercontinuum laser, the FFS.SYS-CONT, outputs light over the wavelength range of 1050 to 2100 nm, with a typical total power of 150 mW. It has a pulse length<100 fs between1700 and 2100 nm, with an average power in that range of 5 to 40 mW. The repetition rate is factory-set between 80 and 110 MHz. The beam divergence is wavelength-dependent but below 1 mrad, and the beam shape is TEM_00.

The lasers are designed for flexibility in scientific applications, and the addition of the FFS-COMP compression module produces shorter pulses of <40 fs for wavelengths less than 1400 nm. By frequency doubling the infrared supercontinuum, the company has developed a narrowband, widely tunable version in the visible region that provides high power per nanometer and good power stability. With a bandwidth of 1 nm and a tuning range from 485 to 700 nm, it produces power between 1 and 10 mW.

Princeton instruments has introduced the Quad-RO: 4320, a 4-megapixel fibre optically coupled camera or indirect x-ray imaging applications. The maintenance-free thermoelectrically cooled camera is housed in a compact package and offers better than ±0.1 ◦c temperature precision and a FireWire interface. It delivers>70% quantum efficiency at 560 nm and fast readout of 0.72fps. it has a front – illuminated 2084 x 2084-format sensor with 24µm pixels and 1 50X50-mm image area. Features include three independent gains and software- selectable speeds of 1 MHz and 500 kHz.

The MM-3M-ST Standard Stage is the World's Smallest - Full Travel - Motorized Stage. It has a half inch travel. The 10mm DC servo motor travels with the carriage during translation. It is available in X and XY configurations. DILAS introduces its latest conduction-cooled, fiber-coupled diode laser modules for pumping, medical treatments, material processing, defense and similar applications that demand high-power, stable sources with the highest beam quality. DILAS’ 1550nm laser diode modules are based on our single-bar and multi-bar configurations, depending on the customer’s need.

DILAS also introduces the only commercially available high-power diode laser arrays operating at 1940nm with wall plug efficiencies of >10%.  With proprietary epitaxy, these high-power diode laser arrays can be principally integrated into all DILAS packages, ranging from single-bar configurations up to large-scale stack modules which can include hundreds of bars per module. The new 1940nm fiber coupled diode laser modules are primarily targeted at the medical (therapeutic dermatology and surgery) and industrial markets (material processing applications).

The BM series consists of Aerotech’s high-performance brushless rotary servomotors. The motors feature neodymium iron boron magnets for maximum torque and acceleration in a small package. A skewed stator design and an eight-pole rotor provide low torque ripple and smooth velocity. The CHEETAH is a high speed digital infrared camera and combines a thermoelectrically cooled InGaAs detector head with the control and communication electronics. The CHEETAH unit is available with standard wavelength (0.9 to 1.7 µm) InGaAs detector arrays. The ML-PPP Analyzer and Emulator is a tool that emulates and analyzes Point-to-Point (PPP), Multi-Link Point-to-Point (MLPPP), and Multi-Class MLPPP protocols. Multilink Protocol (MLPPP) allows splitting, recombining, and sequencing datagrams across multiple data links into a single logical pipe or bundle. ML-PPP has wide application for access lines to Internet Service Providers (ISPs) and enterprises that need "single pipes" greater than one T1 but less than 28 T1s. ML-PPP is similar to IMA (Inverse Multiplexing over ATM), in the sense that larger bandwidth is derived by aggregating smaller physical channels. The Multi-Class Extension to Multi-Link PPP allows a sender to fragment the packets of various priorities into multiple classes of fragments, and allows high-priority packets to be sent between fragments of lower priorities.

Avantes introduces a newly developed light source ‘AvaLight™DH-S-BAL’ for their extensive AvaSpec™ Spectrometers line. The new development offers balanced properties and increases the various dynamic ranges of their existing instruments to a great extent. The new product complements the large range of AvaLight™ sources. The new AvaLight™ eliminates the D-alpha line at 655 nm which has been problematic for users of deuterium sources due to its tendency to saturate detectors. In addition, the intensity of the Halogen portion of the spectrum can be adjusted to provide customers with the capability to further balance the spectral properties of the AvaLight^TM for a given application. The AvaLight^TM -DH-BAL includes a shutter that can be operated manually or via TTL signal from the Avantes spectrometer platform. Continuum has released a system that unites an optical parametric oscillator (OPO) docking platform and an Inlite laser under one control interface. Supporting both Inlite II and Inlite III lasers, the platform can be configured with either a tunable or a fixed-wavelength OPO. Built from an aluminum casting, the system is designed for rugged environments and is resistant to vibration and temperature changes. Laser heads and power supplies are interchangeable, and >50 million shots are guaranteed. Communication is via an RS-232 interface, and the system is supplied with a graphical user interface that runs under Windows.

At the end of June 2007, seven new models have been added to ILX Lightwave’s high power laser diode driver family with higher QCW output current and higher compliance voltage. These sources combine high current output, precision measurement and control, with multiple levels of laser diode protection eliminating costly diode failures during testing. Each source operates in either CW or QCW mode with precision low noise current output and clean pulses.

The TOPAS White is a non-collinear OPA (NOPA) developed for high conversion efficiency of ultrashort pulse operation in the UV and visible range. The TOPAS White utilises 100+ femtosecond pulses to generate 10-30fs output. In the visible wavelength range, the TOPAS White gives high energy output, typically more than 40µJ. The TOPAS White is a device that is pumped by 100 - 200fs pulses from an amplified Ti:Sapphire laser system and provides tunability in the visible range along with pulse compression. The pump pulses are tilted to match the signal for higher applicable pump energy and conversion efficiency. Internal efficiency of the OPA of over 30% and signal pulse energy over 40mJ has been achieved.

Scanning force microscopy is an extremely high resolution method for topography measurements. The atomic force microscope (AFM) consists of a small tip fixed to a very fine cantilever (approx. 150 µm long and 2 µm thick). The tip is positioned above the surface. When approaching the sample, the cantilever is bent in response to the force interaction between the tip and the sample. This flexing is measured via an optical light technique. An electronic control system keeps the measuring tip at a constant distance from the sample’s surface by appropriately adjusting position lower or higher. By scanning the surface, line by line in the x and y directions, the movement of the tip will result in an exact image of the surface’s topography.
